As Charles rose from his bed, there was no sunlight coming from his windows. He walked to his kitchen, sleepily wiping at his eyes. Once there, he turned his stove on and set the fire to medium. Watching the flames pour out in a steady stream of blue and red, he thought about his book. He had been working on it for over 3 years now, but couldn’t find the right way to end it. It was called “The Will of The Wisps”, and it was sure to be his magnum opus. At least, he hoped it would be. Setting aside his doubtful thoughts, he cooked his breakfast and sat down at his computer. He took a bite, and typed. Then he took another bite and deleted. He repeated this for hours, barely managing to complete a single paragraph before noon had arrived. Rereading his work, he made a few final changes and decided to go on a walk. Putting on his mask, he ventured outside. His home city of Campanularia was known for a beautiful name and not much else. There was nothing notable about it, and it was in every way boring. This made it easy to get lost in your mind while walking, which is exactly what Charles was experiencing as he continued along. He thought about how much more beautiful life could be if he could live in a world of his own creation. No more stressing over the smallest things, no more fear that he wouldn’t be able to pay the bills, no more scandals from the government. He would be free to live in any way he desired. Free enough to make every decision on his own volition. Nothing could chain him down, and he would rise above the clouds with his will alone. The world he imagined felt so possible, so tangible that he could almost touch it. Almost. Reality set back in, and his mind returned to the sights in front of him. The sun had almost set and he decided to go back home. Walking past his computer, the somber blue light guided him to his bed. Laying down, his blankets enveloped him. They helped him feel drowsy enough to forget that he would have to go through the same routine again tomorrow. As his eyes closed, and he fell out of consciousness, he wondered about when he would finish his book. He wondered if finishing the book would grant him a taste of the life he so craved. He wondered if the life he wanted was even possible. Maybe it was just a mirage, but those were questions for tomorrow. For tonight, he would dream of his own world. A world where he was Free.
I love the small details in the writing and explaining the process of your characters mind, it is very relatable and enjoyable to read!
